We’re in the hottest part of summer now and many Canadians are suffering from heat waves across the country. Workouts are more tough and scheduling long runs to happen before heat sets in is nearly impossible. Your best bet to cope with hot and sticky weather: head to the beach. When you do, be sure to toss a running-themed book into your beach bag. Here are our picks for your beach reads: Get Off Your Ass And Run If you’ve been lacking in motivation lately and need that kick in the pants to get you going, this is the book for you. This book is like having a coach and a tough running buddy on your case to get working. A big bonus is that it’s funny and quick to read with anecdotal sections of Ruth Field’s running experiences. Field manages to harp on you for laziness and call out the classic excuses for not running without coming off preachy. This book is easy to get through is a couple afternoons sitting on the beach. Rather than feeling that the run is a thing to check off the chore list, runners will actually WANT to get up and go. Bring a pair of shoes to the beach with you for when this happens.    Running Like a Girl: Notes on Learning to Run  Some have called it “Bridget Jones-like” and others support the fact that if you read this book, you will explode in fits of laughter. This book is about a women in her twenties who has decided to take on running for the first time. In doing this, she must figure out all the basics and overcome condescending runner veterans in running apparel shops. This self-deprecating story is quick to read and entertaining throughout. Perfect for the beach bag!  Girl Runner Girl Runner is written by Waterloo, Ont. writer Carrie Snyder. This is for the runner who is also an avid reader. It’s a great pick for the person goes to the beach to tune out and be whisked away by pages of a compelling story. The plot follows (fictional) former Olympic athlete Aganetha Smart as she reflects on her youth growing up in rural Ontario. The book takes readers back in time to the 1928 Olympics where Smart runs track in Amsterdam. This was the first year that women were allowed to race in the 800m event. Both men and women readers will love learning about the moment in running history through the narrative of Smart’s career in the sport.  Yoga For Runners Have tight muscles or feeling like you need to straighten out and imbalance? Yoga might be the way. Many runners find yoga to be an activity complimentary to running. With this book, runners can find yoga poses that target their problem spots. Get ready for smoother running after testing out yoga poses. The good part about taking a guide like this to the beach is that readers will be able to quickly flip through a book with lots of images rather than being laden down with text (if that’s not your thing).
